Material Options
A-M Systems offers a variety of materials in wire and rod form, including (listed in order of popularity):
- Stainless Steel: Affordable and strong. Available in a variety of hardnesses that vary in stiffness/flexibility. Good for either acute or chronic recordings. Can deposit iron for electrode path marking.
- Silver: Very soft metal and therefore highly flexible. Commonly used as reference electrodes when chloridized.
- Platinum-Iridium Alloy (90/10): A very strong alloy with better electrochemical stability than tungsten, making it the preferred choice for studies involving microstimulation as well as long term recordings. Excellent biocompatibility.
- Platinum: A strong metal; without the 10% iridium content a bit more flexible. Excellent biocompatibility.
- Nichrome: Our finest wires, for where minimal insertion damage is essential.
- Tungsten: Tungsten is our strongest offering, which allows for sharp tip shape that is less likely to curl or be damaged during insertion. Used for both acute and long term chronic recordings.
- Gold: Our softest metal option.
Insulation Options
By far, our insulated products are more popular than our uninsulated counterparts–with the exception of our silver wires. Silver wire is commonly used after it has been chloridized by the user for use as a reference electrode or in a glass electrode holder.
We offer three primary insulation materials:
- PFA (perfluoroalkoxy alkanes) derivative: Our most popular option. Exhibits very high resistance to heat, excellent chemical resistance, and has excellent dielectric properties.
- PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene): Scores lower on electrical resistance, chemical resistance, and flexibility, but it is also less expensive.
- Formvar: Has excellent resistance properties and is very strong, as evidenced by its popular use as an insulator for motors and transformer windings.
Important Wire Specifications
Wire specifications are numerous, but for the typical A-M Systems application, the critical parameters of interest are often:
- Purity
- Tempering
- Annealing
- Tensile strength
- Stranding
- Operating temperature
Glossary
- Purity: Analysis of the chemical breakdown in a material. “4N,” or “Four Nines,” refers to a purity of 99.99%, for example; and “3N,” or Three Nines, refers to a purity of 99.9%.
- Tempering: A process of hardening or strengthening a material by heating.
- Annealing: A process of softening a material by heating.
- Tensile Strength: The maximum stress a material can withstand before breaking.
- Stranding: The individual strands of a material that when twisted form a cable. Almost all of A-M systems wires are single-strand with the exception of our PFA-insulated, multistranded wires.
- Operating Temperature: The acceptable range of temperatures the material can be exposed to without resulting in a change in properties or shape.
Rod (Straight Wire) Products
A-M Systems also provides a variety of Rod products. Our popular wire products are pre-straightened into short lengths for use in microelectrode production. Most of these are bare, uninsulated rod segments as the process can deform the insulation (not break it, but deform it).
Custom Projects
A-M Systems has the capability to make custom wire or rod products if our customers do not find what they need listed on our website. However, there are challenges as minimum quantities need to be met:
- Custom insulated wire quantities often exceed 5,000 feet
- Custom rod quantities often require 500 feet
