The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) is an international center for research, education and training in embryology, physiology, neurobiology, microbiology, reproduction and parasitology. Located in scenic Woods Hole, Mass., just steps from the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard, the MBL becomes a summer paradise for senior grad students, postdocs, and visiting scientists in the months of June through August.

The Laboratory, whose traditions date back to 1888, offers seven main courses with lecture components and intensive lab work as well as 19 special topic courses ranging from ethics and informatics to molecular mycology and computational neuroscience.

A-M Systems has formed a partnership with the MBL over the years and has become a supplier of electrophysiology equipment used in the lab courses.

Our instruments play integral roles in four popular courses at the MBL summer program:

This summer I visited the MBL to meet the staff and observe a few of the courses. Martha Peterson, who was very generous with her time, is the MBL Education Lab Coordinator and oversees the preparation and installation of lab equipment used in the summer courses.

“A-M Systems has been able to keep up with our increasing loan equipment requests since 2003,” Ms. Peterson said of our involvement in the summer courses. She also described our supply of loaner instruments as “very commendable and essential for our courses.”

I saw our Model 1600 Neuroprobe Amplifier in action in the SPINES laboratory course as the students measured membrane potentials in crayfish preparations. Intensive one-on-one instruction during the lab sections from leading neuroscientists is the hallmark of the summer training program at the MBL.

I also observed the final presentations for the Neurobiology course. In this course, participants used the Model 2100 Isolated Pulse Stimulator and a variety of our extracellular amplifiers (Models 1700 and 1800) for their investigations.

It was amazing the amount of data and the depth of knowledge that these students had gained about their individual topics within the short month they had to complete their mini-projects.

A-M Systems is proud to partner with the MBL in providing electrophysiology instrumentation for their prestigious summer courses in neuroscience, and would like to thank Martha Peterson for her help in coordinating the courses.
